(WWLP- Amy Phillips) The Massachusetts State Senate has adopted two amendments that will expand access to veterans’ behavioral health and support the unique needs of women veterans.
According to Westfield Senator John C. Velis, who proposed the amendments, since 9/11 over 1,400 veterans have lost their lives to suicide in Massachusetts. Amendment 804 provides an additional $500,000 to the Home Base program to expand training efforts across the state to offer veterans with behavioral health treatment close to home.
Women veterans are the fastest-growing population of veterans in the country. Amendment 454 would allow for a women’s veterans network within the executive office of veterans’ services and expand outreach to women veterans to help them get access to benefits and services, and support the transition to civilian life.
“In my opinion, Memorial Day is the most sacred day of the year,” remarked Velis. “And as we honor and remember all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our nation, we are also reminded of our sacred duty to ensure that we are doing everything we can for our veterans.”
