State leaders discuss student mental health

(WesternMass News) Youth mental health and an innovative new school based behavioral health program was highlighted Tuesday. A round table discussion was hosted by State Senator John Velis and Senate President Karen Spilka at Agawam High School.

During the roundtable the Senators had the opportunity to hear from youth, parents, and school staff about how the pilot program has improved access to mental and behavioral health services for students in Agawam and made services almost immediate.

“It’s been just stellar results; it’s been a really cool thing. And then to hear the kids and what they say about it, I think that’s why we get into this.” Said Senator John Velis.

In 2023 the Massachusetts State Senate adopted a $500,000 amendment sponsored by Senator John Velis to create the school-based behavioral health program, known as MCPAP for Schools, which has been piloted in the school districts of Somerville and Agawam over the last year. A few weeks ago, during the Senate’s debate of the 2026 budget, the same amendment from Senator Velis was again adopted to help continue and expand the program across the state.

“I think this is part of something that we as a legislature, as well as the state Department of Education can look at and help us support programs like this that are proving to be successful.” said Senate President Karen Spilka.

Another hot topic at Tuesday’s round table was how cell phones, especially in the classroom, can affect student mental health. Senators told us there will be a bill coming shortly to crack down on that issue.
