The honor recognizes his work strengthening disability services and supporting the human services workforce.
(WWLP-2/26/26) Massachusetts Senator John Velis was named the 2025 Senator of the Year by the Association of Developmental Disabilities Providers.
The Association of Developmental Disabilities Providers, or ADDP, represents more than 130 organizations across Massachusetts. These providers support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families through a range of statewide services.
The recognition took place during a virtual gathering hosted from the Massachusetts State House. The association selected Velis based on his history of advocating for policies that impact vulnerable residents and the professionals who support them.
Stephanie Costa, president and CEO of the Association of Developmental Disabilities Providers, highlighted the senator’s long-term dedication to the field. “Sen. Velis’ commitment to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities has been evident since his earliest days in public service,” Costa said. She added that the organization and its members are grateful for his leadership in championing policies that strengthen disability services.
Because Velis is currently on active-duty deployment with the Massachusetts National Guard, he was unable to attend the ceremony. Caitlyn Letourneau-Jancsy, his director of communications and community engagement, accepted the honor on his behalf.
Letourneau-Jancsy described Velis as passionate about advancing policies for both individuals with disabilities and the professionals who work with them each day. “The Senator often shares how proud he is that his first vote as an elected official was to strengthen protections for people with autism, minutes after being sworn into the House of Representatives,” Letourneau-Jancsy said. She noted that his commitment includes policy backing, funding, and building ongoing relationships within the community.
The physical award presented during the virtual event was created by a local artist. The piece was made at Riverside Industries, an organization located in Easthampton.

Sen. Velis plans to share his appreciation with the Association of Developmental Disabilities Providers and the artist from Riverside Industries when he returns home from his deployment.
