(22 News WWLP) State Senator John Velis announced Tuesday a $100,000 state earmark for the YMCA of Greater Westfield’s Camp Shepard as part of the fiscal year 2027 state budget.
Velis joined local leaders, YMCA officials, and community members in Westfield to celebrate the funding, which was included in the FY27 budget signed into law in July. The earmark will support infrastructure and program improvements at Camp Shepard.
“The YMCA of Greater Westfield is really an incredible staple in our community and has supported so many youth and families throughout its many years of existence,” Velis said. “Thousands of children have had the opportunity to experience nature and spend their summers in a safe and enriching way, all because of Camp Shepard.”
The announcement was attended by Greater Westfield YMCA CEO Andrea Allard, State Representative Kelly Pease, Westfield Mayor Michael McCabe, YMCA board members, and other community stakeholders.
Allard said the funding will help advance the camp’s Building Together campaign and continue its mission of serving local youth.
“This $100,000 investment is an important step forward for Camp Shepard and our Building Together campaign,” Allard said. “Camp Shepard has been a special place for generations of local kids to build confidence, make lasting friendships, and feel a true sense of belonging.”
According to officials, the funding is intended to improve camp facilities and programs, helping ensure Camp Shepard can continue serving families in the Greater Westfield area for years to come.
