Hundreds unite for ‘Out of the Darkness’ suicide prevention event in Agawam

(WWLP) – Hundreds gathered at an event organized by the American Society of Suicide Prevention to raise money and support for suicide prevention efforts.

The event brought together people affected by suicide, aiming to foster community support and encourage individuals to seek help. Attendees participated in a bead ceremony, where each color represented different experiences related to suicide, such as the loss of a loved one or personal struggles.

“My real hope is someone who might be struggling, someone who might think about calling the hotline, 988,” Senator John Velis said. “Someone who might ask someone for help, and if we can do that for one person, one, it is a beautiful success.”

Paul Bateman, who attended the walk after losing his husband Warren Flebotte, shared his experience, stating, “Warren, we were together 20 years, and we were married for about three, and then he took this path which has been very difficult for me and everyone in the family, but I have an amazing support group so that’s been incredible, it’s been a big boost for me.”

Suicide remains one of the leading causes of death in the United States, and in Massachusetts, it ranks as the 16th leading cause. The event aimed to change these statistics by promoting awareness and support for those affected.

Testimonials were shared before the walk began, with participants encouraging those struggling to seek help, emphasizing that they are loved and not alone.

The event highlighted the importance of community support and the availability of resources like the 988 hotline for those struggling with suicidal thoughts. Participants left with a renewed sense of hope and determination to support one another.
