Holyoke schools to upgrade sound system at HHS North auditorium

(MassLive) Voices and music soon will be clearer at Holyoke High School North, as the district plans to upgrade the auditorium’s sound system.

The district is using $120,000 in state Fair Share Supplemental Funding to replace the old audio equipment at the school.

Fair Share funding comes from a state tax on the highest-income residents and helps pay for education and other public needs. Massachusetts voters approved the Fair Share Amendment in November 2022. Also known as the “millionaire’s tax,” it created a 4% tax on income over $1 million, with the money going to education and transportation.

Interim Superintendent Anthony Soto thanked state Sen. John Velis for helping the district get the funding. He said the new system will be fully integrated and easier to use.

“The audio system is very old, and there are better systems available,” Soto said. “This will help the auditorium be used more effectively.”

The district will next ask for price quotes from contractors. Once a company is selected, officials will be able to set a timeline for the project, a district spokesperson said.
