(WWLP) – Governor Healey, joined by veterans and legislators from western Massachusetts and across the state, held a signing ceremony for a prolific veteran reform law–the HERO Act.
This legislation looks to modernize and expand veteran benefits, including improving access to mental health care and widening the state’s definition of veteran to include more service members and their families.
“This a historic action. It’s a big deal, and as governor, I don’t think I could be more proud than to be able to sign something like this today,” said Governor Healey at the ceremony. “Massachusetts, our great commonwealth, and our great people are always and will be behind our military, veterans, service members, and their families.”
Senator John Velis served in Afghanistan before being elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives, and eventually the state Senate representing Hampden and Hampshire. He was one of the primary sponsors of the HERO Act and attended the signing to celebrate fellow service members who fought for this legislation to pass.
“Whether you were drafted, whether you volunteered, every single thing we take for granted is because of the blood, the sweat, and the tears of our service members,” said Velis. He also highlighted close collaboration between the House, Senate, and Governor’s office to get this legislation passed.
The law marks the first time a governor has introduced expansive veteran welfare legislation in 20 years.
