Agawam receives state funding to improve several schools

(10/2/2025- WesternMass News) The state has stepped in to help students and teachers in Agawam with funding for their elementary schools.

On Thursday, State Senator John Velis presented Agawam officials with a check for $125,000. The money was secured from the state’s ‘Fair Share Supplemental Budget’ to help the district with capital improvements.

Specifically, Agawam Public School Superintendent Sheila Martin told Western Mass News that it will be used towards the design of news roofs for the town’s four elementary schools. “Our facilities are really important to maintain continuous learning in our schools so, without good facilities that aren’t well maintained, it’s really hard to have our teaching and learning go on without disruption,” she explained.

Velis added that that the funding celebration showed how effective government can work, especially in light of the current government shutdown on the federal level. “The cost of things right now has increased exponentially. Our municipal partners can’t do this alone, so this is government working together for a common goal – our kids – to help them out and I think it’s a really cool thing for them to, for us to celebrate and honor today,” he noted.

The roofs of the four elementary schools date back to 1997 and the town hopes to have them all replaced within the next few years.
